Text: Ezekiel 14: 1-3 and 5

“1 Some of the leaders of the Israelites came to consult me about the Lord's will. 2 Then the Lord spoke to me. 3 “Mortal man,” he said, “these men have given their hearts to idols and are letting idols lead them into sin. Do they think I will give them an answer? 5 All those idols have turned the Israelites away from me, but by my answer I hope to win back their loyalty.” (GNB)

God never forces us to worship Him however, it is His desire that we do. Today’s text speaks about God’s condemnation of idol worship among His people. The elders of Israel went before the prophet Ezekiel to seek God’s will concerning their lives. They were seeking the will of God yet their lives were not surrendered to God. They were idol worshipers posing as people of God.

When we hear the word “idol” we typically think of shrines, altars, statues and images presented for worship in ancient cultures however, the idols we commonly encounter today are far from this description.

In our generation, we worship people, jobs, education, money, success, social media and television shows among other things. These contemporary forms of idols are much more tempting and not easily identified. They consume our hearts, mind and time on a daily basis.

God wants to recapture/capture our heart for Himself. He desires nothing more than to become an intimate part of our lives and to bless us. He sees and knows all the things we put first in our lives and is calling us to choose Him before all else. Mathew 6:33 informs us that when we seek the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, God will add ALL other things unto us. Are you ready and willing to position yourself for God to add ALL other things in your life?

Meditate on today’s passage and examine your life.  Where does God fall on your list of priorities? Identify the things you have put first in your life. Pray that God grants you the grace and the strength to resist the temptation of those things and to help you make Him a priority in your life.
